5 Detroit Burgers that Don’t Suck

I was talking to  a friend the other day and we were discussing what Detroit Restaurants and bars had the best burgers.  For most, it is very easy.  For others like me it is very difficult to name just one place who has the Best Hamburger in Detroit.  I personally have different favorites for the different type of hamburger I may want and where I might be on a given day.  I think the only thing my favorite hamburgers in Detroit have in common are cheese and bacon.  This list will be added to and revised as I visit more Detroit Restaurants and bars.  So here is my  list of 5 hamburgers in Detroit that don’t suck.

Sandy’s by the Beech is a long time Redford staple and the burgers are so fresh and juicy.  When I am here I like to order the Bacon Cheeseburger with Cheddar, what you add to it after that is completely up to you.  1/2 lb burger with fries $7.95.

Eclipse Hamburgers located in Sterling Heights is a nice burger joint.  Here I order my burger with Bacon and White Cheddar.  Again, whatever you do to your burger after that is up to you, given the numerous toppings from which they have to choose.  They 1/2 lb burger, fries and drink for $8.99 and they do deliver.

Jay’s Stuffed Hamburgers in Downtown Plymouth is a fast favorite of mine.  I love how they stuff the cheese and toppings inside the burger (hence the name).  Here I like to get the All American which is stuffed with Cheddar Cheese (other options are available) served on a toasted Brioche bun.

When I am in the Royal Oak/ Clawson area I like to stop in at Tavern on the Main.  Here the Tavern on the Main Burger is my selection, a 1/2 lb burger, bacon and Swiss cheese on a Brioche bun always hits the spot.

Shelby Pub & Grill in Shelby Township is an East Side favorite for me.  Here I like to get The Works Burger, 1/2 lb burger, with bacon, mushrooms, onions, Swiss and American cheese on a Brioche bun.  I also like to upgrade to the Waffle Fries.

Brighton’s Gem

Downtown MainDowntown Main Martini Bar & Grille located in Downtown Brighton offers an award winning menu and service to match. You can satisfy your drink desires with more than 100 different martinis, over 200 different kinds of liquors and over 100 beers, and a wine list that offers more than 55 wines.  The bar is unique and very cool with the way it lights up and the atmosphere is very inviting and relaxing.  They also offer outdoor seating weather permitting.  The Downtown Main Martini Bar & Grille’s dedicated and knowledgeable staff and takes pride in offering every guest a night worth telling everyone about.

dt2The  Tapas Menu has dishes like the Portabella Sliders, Pear Pizza (which is topped with mozzarella and crumbled bleu cheese, diced pears, walnuts, bacon) and Pulled Pork Sliders.  You can also make any of the Tapas items an entree and get a basket of the fresh baked bread and soup or salad for $4.00.  There are also healthy and Gluten Free items available on the Tapas Menu as well.

dt4On the Entree Menu, Chef Joe offers everything from sandwiches and salads to some of the best entrees you can find in any Detroit Restaurant.  The Scallops Toscana are a big hit (Pan-seared scallops served with fettuccini pasta sautéed with sweet bell peppers, baby spinach, and garlic in a light vin blanc sauce) so is the Lobster Mac and Cheese, my favorite is the 12 ounce Veal Porterhouse.  There are many great items to select on the Entree menu, but leave room for dessert.

dt3After dinner Downtown Main is one of Detroit’s premiere places to hang out.  There are many different events such as: ladies night, live entertainment, wine tastings, happy hour and weekly food specials.

Detroit’s Best Deli? You Decide!

Mudgie’s Deli was founded in February 2008 in Corktown, when the owners of McNally’s decided to move their location.  The restaurant’s manager, Greg Mudge, opted to stay in the Corktown location and start his own deli to cater to McNally’s existing patrons.

Greg named the sandwiches after “anyone who picked up a paintbrush” to help. All the food is house-made, including the Fudgie Mudgie dessert — a brownie baked to order in a waffle iron, topped with ice cream and Sanders hot fudge.

Mudgie’s Deli was nominated for “Best Deli” and “Best Soup” two years in a row by WDIV-TV through their “Click On Detroit” website, and won “Best Deli in Wayne County” in the Metro Times “Best of Detroit” in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Mudgie’s was also awarded “Best Sandwich” by Hour Detroit Magazine in 2012.

Owner, Greg Mudge says he uses as much locally grown and organic food as he can to help support the local farming community. You can obviously taste the difference in the fresh vegetables and meats used in the salads and sandwiches.

And for the Vegetarian, Mudgie’s Deli is Vegetarian firendly, they offer 4 veggie sandwiches on the menu – 2 vegetarian, 2 vegan and one of their two soups each day is either vegetarian or vegan.

Patio Season in Full Force in Mid Michigan

Summer Tipping Do’s and Don’ts

Summer Tipping Guide

A recent article in Real Simple Magazine summarized some helpful hints for tipping service providers especially during the summer months.  To avoid awkward moments with your food delivery person or hotel housekeeper, follow these helpful hints from Real Simple’s Summer Tipping Guide.

  1. Airport Skycap – keep in mind, large or bulky items such as golf bags and strollers may warrant a little extra gratuity, but a good rule of thumb to follow is $1.00 – $3.00 per bag.
  2. Bellhop – etiquette coach, Patricia Rossi suggests tipping the bellman an extra dollar for suitcases that are on the heavy side, but the typical car-to-room tip should be $1.00-$2.00 per bag.
  3. Camp Counselor – Make sure to read the camp handbook to find out if gratuities are allowed.  If tips are against the rules, a simple thank you note will do; however, at camps were tips are permitted, your child’s counselor should be given up to $10.00 per week.
  4. Dog Groomer – While 15 – 20 percent gratuity is the norm, if your dog is a handful, you should consider tipping an extra 5%.
  5. Dog Walker – According to dogwalker.com, if your pooch is exercised for a week or more, your dog walker should be tipped up to 20 percent of the bill.
  6. Food delivery – 10 – 15 percent is an acceptable amount unless your ordering for a small army in which case, another 5% is warranted.
  7. Gardener or Pool Cleaner – This gratuity should be awarded at the end of the summer and should total $20-$50 or the cost of one visit.
  8. Hotel Housekeeper – It is important to remember that since the cleaning crew changes daily, you should tip daily, even if you’re staying for a week or more.  Acceptable amount? $2.00 – $5.00 per night depending on how nice the hotel is and be sure to add an extra couple dollars if you have a large family.
  9. Housesitter – No gratuity is necessary, but if you’re feeling generous, bring the house sitter a gift from your travels.
  10. Seasonal Sports Instructor – No tip necessary.  You are paying for the sessions with this professional, so no gratuity is expected.
  11. Shuttle-Bus Driver – The Emily Post Institute advises travelers to tip a shuttle-bus driver only if he waits for you, helps with your luggage or gets you to your destination quickly.  Proper amount?  Up to $2.00.
  12. Valet-Parking Attendant – Tip $1.00-$3.00 in small cities or  $3.00-$5.00 in large cities.  Remember, since large vehicles like SUV’s are more difficult to park, be sure to give the attendant a little extra for the trouble.
