5 Detroit Burgers that Don’t Suck

I was talking to  a friend the other day and we were discussing what Detroit Restaurants and bars had the best burgers.  For most, it is very easy.  For others like me it is very difficult to name just one place who has the Best Hamburger in Detroit.  I personally have different favorites for the different type of hamburger I may want and where I might be on a given day.  I think the only thing my favorite hamburgers in Detroit have in common are cheese and bacon.  This list will be added to and revised as I visit more Detroit Restaurants and bars.  So here is my  list of 5 hamburgers in Detroit that don’t suck.

Sandy’s by the Beech is a long time Redford staple and the burgers are so fresh and juicy.  When I am here I like to order the Bacon Cheeseburger with Cheddar, what you add to it after that is completely up to you.  1/2 lb burger with fries $7.95.

Eclipse Hamburgers located in Sterling Heights is a nice burger joint.  Here I order my burger with Bacon and White Cheddar.  Again, whatever you do to your burger after that is up to you, given the numerous toppings from which they have to choose.  They 1/2 lb burger, fries and drink for $8.99 and they do deliver.

Jay’s Stuffed Hamburgers in Downtown Plymouth is a fast favorite of mine.  I love how they stuff the cheese and toppings inside the burger (hence the name).  Here I like to get the All American which is stuffed with Cheddar Cheese (other options are available) served on a toasted Brioche bun.

When I am in the Royal Oak/ Clawson area I like to stop in at Tavern on the Main.  Here the Tavern on the Main Burger is my selection, a 1/2 lb burger, bacon and Swiss cheese on a Brioche bun always hits the spot.

Shelby Pub & Grill in Shelby Township is an East Side favorite for me.  Here I like to get The Works Burger, 1/2 lb burger, with bacon, mushrooms, onions, Swiss and American cheese on a Brioche bun.  I also like to upgrade to the Waffle Fries.

dt2The  Tapas Menu has dishes like the Portabella Sliders, Pear Pizza (which is topped with mozzarella and crumbled bleu cheese, diced pears, walnuts, bacon) and Pulled Pork Sliders.  You can also make any of the Tapas items an entree and get a basket of the fresh baked bread and soup or salad for $4.00.  There are also healthy and Gluten Free items available on the Tapas Menu as well.

dt4On the Entree Menu, Chef Joe offers everything from sandwiches and salads to some of the best entrees you can find in any Detroit Restaurant.  The Scallops Toscana are a big hit (Pan-seared scallops served with fettuccini pasta sautéed with sweet bell peppers, baby spinach, and garlic in a light vin blanc sauce) so is the Lobster Mac and Cheese, my favorite is the 12 ounce Veal Porterhouse.  There are many great items to select on the Entree menu, but leave room for dessert.

dt3After dinner Downtown Main is one of Detroit’s premiere places to hang out.  There are many different events such as: ladies night, live entertainment, wine tastings, happy hour and weekly food specials.

A Little bit of Memphis in Fenton

Memphis is a city that takes great pride in its barbecue. They claim to have the best barbecue in the world and have become famous for it. But what exactly is Memphis-Style Barbecue?

Traditional Memphis barbecue is usually smoked pork served in one of two forms: ribs on a slab or pulled. Memphis is probably best known for its dry barbecue. Most frequently used on ribs, the dry style is highly flavorful and is less messy to eat than wet. In the dry process, the ribs are coated with a rub made from ingredients such as garlic, paprika, onions, cumin, and other spices. They are then cooked in a smoker until they are fall-off-the-bone tender. Typically, dry ribs are served with a sauce on the side.

Beale Street Smokehouse is named after the famed street in Memphis, Tenn. Beale Street Smokehouse is located on North Road in Fenton and serves Memphis-style barbecue, and that means the dry-rub or spices is key to their style. They use a mixture of 16 spices on their meat, then off to the smoker.

To accompany your ribs or pulled pork, Beale Street has sweet potato fries that are dusted with a sweet cinnamon maple powder. One of my favorite sides to go along with my barbecue is one of their 14 Michigan craft beers either on tap or in bottles.

When you are there, you can view upcoming blues bands they have scheduled to play at Beale Street Smokehouse on the chalkboard inside or you can view weekly on www.michiganflavor.com.

If you are looking for a little Memphis, you can find it at Beale Street Smokehouse. Memphis Smoked Barbeque, Michigan Craft Beers and live Blues.

Rub BBQ Pub – Sport’s Bar Atmosphere, Authentic BBQ

Rub BBQ Pub, located yards away from Comerica Park offers a lively sports bar atmosphere and a menu including St. Louis style ribs, beef brisket and pork, as well as sandwiches and steaks.

The most popular item on the menu is the St. Louis-style ribs.  Dry-rubbed with a spice and herb blend before cooking, the St. Louis-style ribs are cooked to perfection and served with two sides. At Rub BBQ Pub, they mix their own rubs and sauces from scratch using over 20 different varieties of herbs and spices, and the flavors really do show.

Rub’s sandwiches are served on a choice of a Brioche Roll or Texas toast and all are named after things Detroit.  On their menu, you find the “Kaline” beef brisket (smoked low and slow and topped with Rub Slaw) and the “Slim Shady” (pulled pork topped with Rub Slaw), all served with Fries.

Rub BBQ Pub offers 30 Beers on Tap(12 0f them Michigan Made) & More than 100 Bottle Beers(19 of them are Michigan Made). For those of you who may be up to the challenge, there is the 5lb. Burrito, including everything but the kitchen sink. If you can handle this monstrosity of a burrito, you’ll be the proud owner of a Rub BBQ Pub T-Shirt, limitless bragging rights, and a photo on the Rub Wall of Fame.

There isn’t a seat in the house without a good view of one of the 30 flat-screen TVs located throughout both rooms, all of which are displaying one sporting event or another at all times.  Rub BBQ Pub is a great place to meet up before or after the game and it’s the perfect place to get together with friends after work to unwind and watch the big game.

At Detroit’s Rub BBQ Pub, there’s not a bad seat in the house and everything on their extensive, Detroit themed menu is out of this world.  Next time you’re downtown Detroit, stop in for some fantastic BBQ.  You’ll be happy you did.
